Focusing on how much a person weighs isn't necessarily an effective way to promote health. Diet culture associates weight loss and thinness with health despite mounting evidence of the negative impacts of dieting and weight-cycling, even in individuals categorized with a normal BMI.
This is an article I wrote for the University of California, Davis. It's purpose was to shed light on the negative implications of being "weight" focused (in attempts to achieve better health) as opposed to being "action" focused. It also considers the influence of life factors such as poverty and job insecurity for example, and how these factors constrain or support health behaviors and personal choice.
